Silk,
Rayon and Linen Fabric Processing
Silk is a natural fiber coming from the cocoon spun by the
silkworm. The feel of silk is luxurious, but is a very fragile fabric.
The weave of silk varies from sheer to a heavy textured weave. Silk is
wrinkle resistant and very comfortable to wear because it is quite
absorbent.
The safest way to clean silk is by
drycleaning. Washing can be an option for some garments but may cause
extreme color loss and wrinkling. Perspiration, perfume and sun fading
are a few problems that the consumer faces. Never wipe a stain or
rinse with water for this could cause permanent damage to the garment.
Silk requires extra care to help retain its full beauty.
The staff at Anderson Cleaners can
return a silk garment to a like new appearance, with a
procedure called mineral bath. There is a degree of color
loss in all silk so be sure to clean all pieces of an outfit to
maintain unity. When taking a silk garment to the drycleaner, be sure
to:
| |
Take the stained garment in immediately. |
| |
Identify the stain for easier removal. |
| |
Point out the sugar stains, such as pop, which yellow with age
if not removed. |
| |
Note that chlorides in perspitation and foods can cause
permanent damage. |
| |
Misuse of hair spray, perfume and toiletries will cause color
change- apply these before you dress. |
| |
Point out chafed areas so we can use the "mineral bath"
procedure. |
Proper care will extend the life of your silk garment. At Anderson
Cleaners, proper cleaning and stain removal techniques will save you
money in the long run.
Rayon is a manmade fabric, with ever-growing popularity. There
are various types of rayon, some even giving the appearance of silk.
Rayon, and its reaction to water, makes it a consumer nightmare. Rain
especially can cause dye migration and leave the resemblance of a
spotted or blotchy garment. The sensitivity of dye and sizing in rayon
prohibits home stain removal. Drycleaning is the safest method of
cleaning.
Stained rayon should be dry cleaned as
soon as possible. BE SURE to point out stains or water spots.
Perspiration and beverage stains can be difficult to remove if the
stain has been left on the fabric for any length of time. Stains will
set with age or yellow depending on the type. Be sure to read the
label. Any garment that says DryClean Only should be
processed in that manner. Home pressing can also cause a shine that,
in most cases, can not be rectified by the drycleaner.
Anderson Cleaners, an experienced dry
cleaner in silk and rayon processing, will return your garment to that
like new condition.
